60th Anniversary of TWU’s 1966 City-Wide Transit Strike

January 1, 2026 marked the 60th anniversary of the union’s first city-wide bus and subway strike. The shutdown last 12 days and resulted in historic gains in wages and benefits for the membership. TWU founder Michael J. Quill and then Local 100 President Daniel Gilmartin led the union out on strike, and both were jailed along with 6 other TWU and Amalgamated Transit Union officials for their defiance of a court order to end the stoppage. A full four-page feature on the strike is carried in the new edition of the Senior Buzz, which should be arriving at members’ homes soon. Here are a few images from that strike.
