James Whalen, a 45-year member and elected officer of MaBSTOA Maintenance before retiring from the job on Nov. 22, 2022, was named Director of the Retirees Association on Feb. 22, 2024 by Local 100 President Richard Davis. 

He started on the job as a Bus Maintainer at the 132nd St. base shop in 1977. He worked at Hudson Pier, 100th Street, Kingsbridge and Gun Hill during his long career. 

His was first elected to a union position in 1986 as Maintenance Vice Chair at Kingsbridge. He continued as Vice Chair after shifting to Gun Hill when Kingsbridge was closed for overhaul in 1989.  He went back to a refurbished Kingsbridge Depot in 1992. He was elected Division Recording Secretary in 1994.

He served as a full time Local 100 Staff Representative for OA Maintenance from 1995 to 2002, when he went back to his tools at the 9th Ave. shop at 207th Street in Manhattan.

Whalen was elected to the TWU International Executive Board in 1997, to the Executive Council in 2001, and as Vice President in 2005, a position he still holds.

He has also held the position as Trustee of the MaBSTOA Pension Fund and has served as a member of the MaBSTOA Pension Investment Committee since 1998.

Since his retirement in 2022, Whalen has worked two days a week helping prospective OA retirees prepare to make the leap from working to retired life.
