The TWU Local !00 Retirees Association is pleased to announce that Aetna and New York Presbyterian Hospital have settled a dispute that had threatened an interruption of service for active Local 100 TA/OA and MTA Bus members; pre-Medicare retirees, and Medicare eligible retirees on April 1, 2024.
The dispute centered on – what else – money.
NYP demanded a renegotiation of terms for coverage with Aetna as the contract between the two health care giants was set to expire on March 31, 2024. The hospital upped the pressure on Aetna by sending a menacing letter to active and retired members who were receiving care at NYP. The letter claimed that service could be denied because of the dispute between the two parties.
The Retirees Association worked with the TWU Local 100 leadership and the MTA to lean on Aetna and NYP to settle their differences promptly to guarantee continuation of service to affected members and retirees.
Retirees Association Director James Whalen said: “We are very happy that this dispute is over, and that care at New York Presbyterian is not affected. These negotiations are common in the health care industry, but it is unfortunate that Local 100 members and retirees were unnecessarily made a part of the drama between the two parties. Be assured that your Association is fully engaged in all areas to protect your right to the health care coverage you have earned and deserve.
